History

Ψ In 1969, a group of lovely MERMAIDS gathered to glamorize International Diving School’s skin & scuba diving demonstrations at the Hawai‘i Kai Rec Center (we returned there in March 2008 to swim “Mermaids & Pirates”). Then, Bill Edwards wanted an underwater ballet for Cec Heftel’s Rodeway Inn, which became the Hawaiian Inn, then the Hawai‘i Dynasty, & now is the Holiday Inn Waikīkī.

Ψ The underwater ballet continued for several years at the Outrigger Hotel, Oceanarium, & with the U.S. Navy’s diving equipment demonstrations for Hale‘iwa Sea Spree, Pearl Harbor Youth Carnival, Armed Forces Day, 50th State Fair, and the 4th of July. Imua Hawai‘i saw the mermaids swimming for Hawaiian Inn parties & created the “Mermaid Luau” at Sea Life Park around us; we got to swim with the fishes, turtles, sea lions, & dolphins.

Ψ Our mermaids have been sited at the Hawai‘i Maritime Center, Atlantis Submarines Grand Opening, Aloha Tower Fountain, Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center Waterfall, Queens Beach, Diamond Head Beach Park, Ye Olde World Faire, & under the Glass Bottom Boat.

Ψ Wintertime 1971 came, MERMAIDS HAWAI‘I presented our 1st Annual Free Christmas Water Show of synchronized swimming at the Hawaiian Inn. We started our Summertime Shows there the following summer. We swam many shows there throughout our 1st 31 years.
